Default No Country For Old Men- Cormac McCarthy

First off, it has to be said that there are simply far too many "c"s within that name.

Now, on with the 'review'. For those who are unaware of this book, it is best described as a thriller set in 1980s Texas and follows the lives of 3 individuals predominantly: Llewlyn Moss, a Vietnam veteran turned retired welder who ventures onto the aftermath of a heroin deal gone sour, Anton Chigurh, a serial killer best described as not having "a sense of humour" and Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, a WW2 veteran and Sheriff of Terrell County who is left trailing after Chigurh and desperately making sure Moss is not at risk.

The book is written in a style that ensures a fast pace at all times, but is equally suspenseful when it is necessary, mostly by means of elongating sentences. This method is incredibly effective in creating suspense and immersing the reader, but it can take a while to get in to, because it seems like such an effort to read a 4-line sentence simply strung together with "and"s every 5 or sixth line when you have just sat down to begin reading. However, this nag immediately dissipates when you are in the hang of the style and then the book simply consumes your time up in quite an unrelenting manner. The amount of dialogue within again aids the pace of the book, and further implements the urge to continue reading. It is also of such a style that it is joyous to read on its own, without considering it in the context of the book, and is a wonderful gateway into the characters that are met within. Cormac really has done a triumphant job with respect to the dialect, and as you can tell I struggle to say enough good things about it (although I try my darndest).

There is a considerable level of humour within the book (as is magically carried over to the Silver Screen with much thanks to the Coen Brothers), and this makes this book more welcoming. If it were not for the humour within it, then this book would be probably the last thing you read before you kick that chair from under your feet and stopping you from hanging yourself. Ok, that was a bit of an exaggeration, but I am currently trying to review a book at 3 in the morning (give or take quarter of an hour). It is at times not a book for the optimist, and the final message of the book is incredibly grim by contrast to what you are most likely expecting. I am not going to divulge anything here, as that would be simply sadistic to deny you of the joy of finding out what is in store for you within this book.

This has not really been much of a book review, again I am blaming the time I am writing this, but I hope there is something of use within it that you can appreciate. I really do think this book is fantastically written piece of work, and it is something that any active reader should seek out and try. It is suspenseful, humorous, and at times shocking, but always leaving you wanting more.

tl;dr:

I'll now demean this review by giving No Country for Old Men 5 bukkakes out of 5!

I won't buy it anytime soon, but not because of your review... Because I don't have a) money and b) the concentration to read a book. But nice review Kossick.

Very Good Review. I probably won't read the book as I have seen the movie.
