Default Why feel guilty?

I was looking through the thread on excuses we make for not answering the phone.

I know people who almost run over others to answer their phone, or open their door if the bell rings or they hear a knock.

Why do we feel guilty if we don't respond? It isn't as if the person on the other end of the phone is paying your phone bill, and most of us have answering machines. Someone in need will leave a message or call back.

Opening the door to an unknown visitor doesn't make sense. It is one thing to answer the door if you are expecting someone, but to open it not knowing what the person on the other side wants makes little sense.

Why are we so compelled to respond to these stimuli? Why do we feel guilty when we choose not to?

About not attending the call,

we would not be guilty when we really was busy and didn't attend the call isn't it? Because, it happens for everyone. But we use to search for excuses only when we intentionally avoided the call. So, we feel guilty whether she/he would understand we avoided him and so we hunt for an excuse As simple as that.

And we care about them not for money. But for relationship or love or friendship. Not just for paying our phoen bills.

If the call is important or that call is for my benifit then I will feel guilty otherwise I dont make excuse. And we dont make excuse because we feel guilty, we make excuse because we dont wanna seem to be bad.

Yes, we don't feel guilty. But we don't want to have any missunderstandings with our loved ones for such a silly thing.

Just like others say I don't really feel guilty.. perhaps just rather curious as to what the person might have wanted, so I'll end up calling them back more than likely later.
But, then again, if I don't answer the phone for someone then I'm probably VERY upset with them, in which case I wouldn't give a shit otherwise.
