Default [Debate] Do you believe in Aliens?

I personally don't think that there can't be any aliens.

I use to argue with my friends. One funny fellow (thinking that he is arguing great) stated that there is no chance of aliens being available as none have arrived to planet earth as shown in movies.

Silly point isn't it? Movies always shows that Aliens are more developed than us. Why can't there be aliens that are not as much as developed even upto us? They STILL are Aliens only if they reside in some other planets.

We have seen just some 9 planets and looking and researching about more planets which is in Milky way. There are thousands and thousands of galaxies, so there could be lacks and lacks of planets in total may be more even. How can we be sure that there can't be aliens?

As I mentioned in the god belief thread, there are on average up to 4*10^22 (40 billion trillion) planets within the universe- the logic behind this is also in the god thread- and the conditions for (carbon-based) life are very small (the fact that most of the known solar system is deemed inhospitable is enough proof of this). However, the actual probability of finding a planet capable of sustaining and producing life is around 1:10^9 (one in a billion- this is a loose guess from the biologist Richard Dawkins which I have loosely picked up). If you look at the brief maths, it this means that it is possible for there to be at least one trillion planets habitable by carbon-based life of any level of intelligence. One trillion may seem a bit large, but if there are around 100 billion galaxies in the universe, then this dictates each galaxy (composed of 100 billion stars) would have on average around 10 life-weilding planets. So in fact, the trillion planets, when put into context, is worringly stark.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Seeing as information cannot travel faster than the speed of light (everything travels through space-time at the speed of light- we are doing so right now with most of the effort in the time-side of things), any beacon we send out or is sent to us would most likely take aeons, so it is fully possible beacons are being sent back and forth from current and extinct races of aliens throughout the universe, it is just that the universe is a rather large place. And of course, all of races may just be retards, or see us as the retards, somewhat accordingly. A lot of us do, after all, dedicate regulated amounts of time a week to an invisible man =)

What I believe is that there is some sort of life form out there in the galaxy other than us, but I dont believe that they are the stereotypical aliens that are green with a huge head and antanea. I would guess that they would be more insecty...

I agree with you. Space is so big that it's a bit naive to say there can't be other life out there. I agree they might not be as developed. I'd hope we're the most developed really! I think it'll be exciting if we find some aliens and I wonder what they'll look like? I doubt they'll be green too lol.

Yes, when people think aliens, they just get all these green's and antenna's in mind. Thats the reason many don't believe in Aliens. And also after seeing all the movies which just state that Aliens are developed than us, people have a thought that if there is Alien, then they SHOULD be developed than us. Its not like that, they can still be like animals. Or just bacteria like, which are not even visible for Eye but still exist.

Another point to raise here, when we say Aliens we instantly assume intelligent life- life capable of free thought and sophisticated communication. However, alien life is simply any form of life that is existing extra-terrestrially, so any bizarre form of organism (a mutated form of an amoeba for example) being found on another planet is sufficient proof of alien life.

You also have to consider what form of composite material this life is composed of. 4% of the universe is matter which is common to us- quarks, leptons, elements such as oxygen, carbon, lead and subsequently the planets, stars, comets, galaxies- which leaves a staggering 96% of the universe as "dark" to us- it does not absorb or radiate light- and 26% of this is "dark matter", which we have absolutely no idea what it is made of. This has odd implications on potential life, because they would not form in the same way as we have- we are composed of intrinsic combinations of atoms which are made of protons, neutrons and electrons orbiting the nucleus which are obviously "light" as they absorb and radiate light. Dark matter-based life would not form in such a way because of course it requires different constituent particles to electrons and nucleons (protons and neutrons), so to be honest it is either all together impossible, or it is already happened and there are dark beings living among us. Unfortunately we would never be able to tell, but it does make for some beautiful ideas in the mind.

Sorry for the mini-lecture there.
