So the art of search engine optimization is all about getting your site onto that first page of results – ideally into the No.1 position. It’s a simple concept, but most people go about it the wrong way. As a result, they not only fail to get the traffic they want, they may even get themselves banned by certain indexes.

I agree. But a layman would not understand what you mean. There are legal ways to get your site listed in no.1 in SE. And there are also short cuts (Not actually termed as illegal but short cut) All those who use short cuts to acheive SE ranking would achieve it in the beginning. But would not last for ever. The search engines have a Sandbox in which they would just put and dig all these kinds of websites and spam and scam websites so that it doesn't appear in search Engine once again.
